Barry Weaver – Untitled (1991)

barry-weaver-1991-mixtape

This is an untitled mix that was contributed by Josh McClintock. We believe it’s a 1991 mix by Barry Weaver, though we’re not 100% sure. It certainly has all of the characteristics of a Barry Weaver mix though — the dreamy intro, the train in the middle, lots of breakbeat, tight tight mixes, and an incredible selection of tunes. This is an instant favorite!

  1. A friend of mine gave me this mix in 1991 and told me it was Barry Weaver. It was 3rd or 4th generation so the quality is poor but its just too good not to post. To this day it remains one my favorite mixes. Fucking incredible. Especially when you consider the year it was made. A mix that I judge other mixes by. I will post a track list shortly….and yes there are a bunch of tunes I dont know. If anybody can name just one of the id’s it would make my day. Been hunting every tune on here since I first heard this. ENJOY!!!

  6. Josh thanks for sharing the tape im gonna listen to side 2 today would love a complete track list myself..lets see if anymore tunes ring a bell.

  7. Thanks Josh for passing this “lost” mix over to Jason and thanks Jason for posting the mix! Uh, Josh, I’d love to know the story behind how Therese ended up with a copy of this mix. Yes, it’s definitely me! And I totally remember making this mix too – the Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares meets Moody Blues on the first side intro and that Self Help record at the start of side two are trademark “me”, as is the use of the train. Also, the “it’s not over, it’s____over” (from one of those DMC Loops And Grooves volumes) trick at the end of side two is a dead giveaway…
I have no idea why it was not released, or what my intention was for this mix. I couldn’t begin to tell you what it was going to be called. If I had to make a guess I’d say it might have been intended as a next Milky Way tape, but I’m not really sure. Hell, I wouldn’t have been able to even pinpoint the year I made it, so if you say 1991, I’ll buy that! Oh, and thanks guys for IDing most of the tracks! Appreciate it.

  8. Awesome backstory to the mix. Thank you Barry! That Le Mystere track is so beautiful! I will have to ask Therese how she got this mix!!! hahaha Pretty sure it was a close friend of yours gave it to her.

  9. I skipped through the mixes with the player and spotted some on the B side for ya –

    Side B – track @ 8 mins = Rhythmatic – Wind Me Up

Side B track @ 20 mins = Agaric – Tiled Room (Reverse Mix)

    Side B track @ 23 mins = Quazar – Midsummernight’s Dream

  10. Great Mix Barry, Thanks for posting it up Josh.

Anyone have more of the DREAM series tapes? The Jon Williams one has already been posted but I recall that Barry’s and Bishop’s tapes were completely sick! Still kicking myself for not keeping better track of those tapes back then. Great times back then, always remembered, friends never forgotten…

    Cheers guys..

  11. I have a friend that has the complete DREAM series. A lot of them came with weird titles and no DJ names but my friend deciphered those as well. I’ve been waiting to see what he does with it. The DREAM parties were incredible. Truly excellent. They were mostly around ’94 or ’95 but had an ’91 feel to them. Many FANTASTIC sets were played there.

  12. “B-Dub One”? Wow! Dope info! I have B-Dub 2 and could never find the 1st one. Guess I had it all along. Does it say “B-Dub One” on the tape?

  13. Wuzzzup….I found a couple more tracks for this awesome mix that I thought I’d share…as well as revise the track list. I finally id’d that “rockin to the rhythm” track on side 1 (Linea Alba – Chill 0 matic) and the 3rd track on side 2 is Strange Parcells – To be free.

  15. My first mixtape!! Given to me in 1991 by my long time bro Rick Zar, (who was married at that time to Suzanne, who had recently turned Rick onto the nascent L.A. underground subculture. Suz was well-known and loved in the L.A. underground scene. A bit of a fixture in those early days).

Rick was a life-long rock and roll guitarist, so it was unusual when he turned me on to the L.A. underground. Electronic dance music was not what I would expect from a die-hard rock and roller. But we both took to the underground like fish to the sea. It turned out that rock and roll and underground dance music aren’t as different as they seem. They share the same fire, the same spirit: that renegade, devil-may-care, pirate vibe. Kindred spirits!

    Truly life-changing shit!

(BTW, you might remember Rick Zar from many of those early, great underground events: I used to help Rick set up rooms full of those crazy plasma lightning globes and crackle tubes and various bitchin’ lighting effects. It was fun to watch Rick’s artwork blow trippin’ people’s minds!) A few years later, I went on to become the L.A. regional director for Burning Man for over 7 years, and producer of the infamous Burning Man Opera 1998 – 2002.

So, to this very day, this early Barry Weaver mix is one of my favorite mixtapes of all time! Back in the day, and for many years, I played the fuck out of it. Though I haven’t listened to it in years, I’m listening to it right now, as I type this message. It’s like an old friend! I remember every little detail, like you do with music. You never forget even the most subtle little hidden interesting bits..!

This early mixtape made Barry Weaver an instant hero in my world. Thank you for that, Mr. Weaver! I hope you’re doing well and happy, where ever you may be!

  16. Wow! Didn’t see your post until now Twan! Very cool! And very interesting to hear you had a copy of this mix as well.
On a side note.. few days ago I bought a copy of “Confusion Club – Move” that appears on this tape off Discogs. It was the last copy available in the U.S. and I was stoked to have it after all these years. It wasn’t until I got my Paypal statement that I came to the realization that I had just bought it off THE MAN MR BARRY WEAVER!!! Haha!! I hit him up and we had a nice chat. He told me the copy I was buying was most definitely the one used in this mix! Stoked!!

  17. The unknown white label on side 2 track 5 is Major Maestro – Pump and Whine. I got a copy from Doc years ago on a white label. Never knew what it was. Looks like somebody finally added it to the Discogs data base.

I’ve also realized that there is an ambient track playing after the Des Voix Bulgares. He puts the Moody Blues on top of that and then out and then lets it go into Wave Mechanics. Plays from :58 to 3:40.
