I had intended to put this mix up around Christmas, as you can see from the write up by Thee-O below. There were some temporary issues with the site that delayed this from happening, as well as my posting anything. I’m happy to say everything is resolved now and new music should be appearing on a more regular basis. Enjoy!
“I recorded this set live at Drumbeats in Love in the High Desert around my birthday in 1993. The party was pretty damn good from what I remember of it. The set comprised of some of some hard trance from Eye Q and Harthouse Records. I was a big fan of that sound at the time. What I do remember is that I made this tape as a Christmas present. I only made about 100 I think and just gave them away. It is a pretty rare tape and I am glad Simfonik is putting up near Christmas so that I can give it away again.” – Thee-O
DJ Thee-O – Live At The Drum Beats Of Love (Side 1)
I’ve had a lot of requests for this tape. When I asked Thee-O if he’d write something up about this mixtape, here’s what he had to say:
“Omar (now known as Darius Alexsander) and I have known each other a very long time. We both went to the same Jr. High and High School. When I first met him in 8th grade we were both into DJing. I remember riding my ten speed over his house just to get my hands on some 1200’s which I did not have at the time. After high school we both got into the rave scene. We both started DJing different things and kept in touch with each other over the years. We decided to do our first mix tape some time in 1995 I believe. This is our first Mindwaves tape, of which we eventually made 3. This is one of my most requested mixes to put online and I am glad simfonik.com is getting this up. Hope you enjoy.” – Thee-O
This is the first mixtape from the Cybersex series by DJ Thee-O. Here’s what Thee-O had to say about this tape:
“Cybersex came out in October of 1993. That year was very much a transitional year of techno music. You had things going into different directions. Trance was starting to form and the breakbeat techno I was spinning was starting to mutate into drum n’ bass. At the time I was really getting to the new sounds that Warp Records was doing with their Artificial Intelligence series which includes artists as Black Dog Productions, Aphex Twin, B-12 and Autechre to name a few. At the same time R&S was doing a side label called Apollo that was also moving more into what today would be called IDM. I started getting into these sounds and decide to create a tape with these sounds. I am pretty happy about how it came as it was very different for the time. It is still one of my favorite mixes. I hope you enjoy.” – Thee-O
The California Project – 16 tapes, 8 DJ’s and 24 hours of mixed music. A very ambitious and limited release from 1994, with mixes from DJ’s Ron D Core, Simply Jeff/DJ Spinn, DRC, Jon Bishop, DJ Dan, Vitamin D, DJ Trance, and Thee-O.
This first installment from The California Project showcases the sounds of DJ Thee-O. Special thanks to Thee-O for contributing this and numerous titles from the Biohazard catalog to the site. More mixes by Thee-O are available here
Special thanks to Tef of CPU101 for hooking this one up.
Us & Them, recorded in 1992 under the name Hidden Threat Productions, was the first mixed tape from DJ Thee-O and The Kandyman.
I caught up with Thee-O a couple of weeks ago and he was kind enough to lend us pretty much the entire Biohazard catalog and some other goodies you won’t want to miss – so stay tuned! If you haven’t heard him play in a while you should check out this mix by Thee-O and Barry Weaver, recorded at Monday Night Social on Monday March 16th, 2009 at Nacional in Hollywood.
I was able to ID all but 3 of the tracks on the Thee-O side, but drew a blank with most of The Kandyman’s side. If you’re able to fill in any blanks please post them in the comments.
