  1. I was there :) Anyone know if this was inside the Casino or on the beach in the morning? I assume it was inside but I remember him playing on the beach. Cool thing is he’s really mixin’ it up (2x copies of Beltram, 1 backwards – droppin’ in Sweet Pussy Pauline, etc. = real, raw DJ action.) Sounds like a perfect set given the crazy pink punch factor. Love really early sets like this – thx.

  2. Who else remembers the last boat pulling away from the island and Dave 7 running out on the pier only to be left behind? LOL Fucking classic. Doc on the beach in the morning with people dancing on the little wooden raft just offshore was magical….I dont remember much of the casino party….but I’m pretty sure this is the set Doc played inside…he played house on the beach. I also remember that there might have been a second room or a funk room downstairs? I remember Doc playing the Sweet Pussy Paulina track in this room and him pointing at someone and saying “he made me play it” which made everybody laugh. I remember buying a couple Milky Way tapes at this party. If anybody has a recording of the MTV clip or knows how to obtain it…please let me know.

  3. Yes, I remember Dave running after the boat. We were the hardcore crew, the last boat to leave! I still have the flyer from this weekend, introducing Jon Williams to the US. He played massive attack’s unfinished sympathy in the casino…and the party on the beach was amazing. I saw the MTV clip when it aired but no idea where to get a hold of it now…

  4. This is for sure inside. Beach party was more tracks from Robert Owens and My Fingers, etc.
Also remember all the OAPs on the beach dancing to Doc Martin, and Dave 7 running down the dock for the last boat and missing it as Doc Martin played his song on the boat as it parted was classic.

  5. It started in the Casino and then worked its way out into the surrounding grounds later the next day, it was a weekend to remember and definitely set the pace for many future raves in the LA area.
Another venue all tho much smaller was called
“Sunday Love” at Black n Blue Sundays nights which always lasted into the early hours on Monday morning and as most of us were headed up into the Hollywood Hills for another 24 hours of after parties the rest of the working world were puzzled that so many cool looking young people seemed so happy at the start of a work week.
Memories are worth a thousand words plus more thats for sure…

  6. At last. This is why I bought my $60 ticket, and to this day remember this event as if it were yesterday. After a 90 minute drive, I got stuck on the Long Beach expressway and arrived at the dock just in time to wave goodbye to the boat as it sailed off to Catalina. An absolutely distraught young lady next to me on the Pier of Gloom explained how incomprehensible a tragedy this situation was and begging me to join her in locating a rowing boat (and heaving off in the wake of a fully-revved engine) reinforced this by repeating “There is NO WAY I CAN’T BE THERE, I MUST BE THERE” for the next five minutes. Then I drove back to LA, got lost, and eventually slept for the next 14 hours. ‘ardcore, me.

  7. This is to confirm that I personally recorded and engineered this Doc Martin mix” Live At Gilligans” inside the casino ballroom. Nothing if it was recorded outside in the morning. It was recorded direct to Digital Audio Tape at the event and the final master mix was completed at my home.

    Best Wishes from:
Mike Paris AKA Michael Milky. Milky Way Rave Recordings.

  8. My brother (Raffi) was at this rave and sent me the tape to London. Doc was always blinding on the decks and still rocks today. Trying to get some track ID’s on the B side of the Gilligans Island tape. Anyone want to try and give it a go? Would like the whole thing if possible but if not than the very first track, the one at 15mins with vocals going Ahemm, Ahaa. Raga tune at 18 mins, and the track near the end with “I just can’t stop” vocal.

I have already identified Black Box’s “Everbody, Everbody” and Saint Etiene “7 Ways to love”

    Good times – never forgotten!

  9. And one last thing! Anyone know the track on the Gilligans A side around 14 mins with the vocals “you’ve got to elevate your mind, elevate your body, elevate your soul, let the rhythm take control”?

    Big up!

  10. The first two songs on side B are:
    Sil “Windows”
Bass Bumpers “Can’t Stop Dancing” (Flavor Mix)

  11. The “7 Ways to love” track is actually “Cola Boy – 7 ways to love” I also spotted “Love Revolution – Give it to me baby” towards the end. Thought I heard “Bad Boy Orchestra – Hip hop salsa” in the middle…but its a mix I’ve never heard before.
After 22 years partying in L.A. this still remains the best party I’ve ever attended.

  12. Thanks Josh! Good call. Quite amazing how well some of these tracks blend in with the newer stuff when you think that they are 22-23 years old.
Still searching for the track on the Gilligans A side around 14 mins with the vocals “you’ve got to elevate your mind, elevate your body, elevate your soul, let the rhythm take control”

    Cheers!

  15. Doc played in the Casino, Moonpup was playing on the departing boat that the Dave7 incident happened and yes he did slip on Dave’s single , Jon Williams was introduced to the scene and had come to the States per our request , he lived close to where a couple of us Credo boys hailed from in Blighty and lastly it was Dom T that played on the beach rounding off the event.
The MTV clip was a Kurt Loader special breaking news special.
Hopefully that clears things up, Baba Lou and Mike Paris are dead right and whomever G Credo is got it dead wrong and is neither Graeme nor myself to be clear.
    BOOM

  20. Cory!!! Can you please contact me on Facebook man. Josh McClintock. It has been a dream of mine to get that footage posted up. I can help pay to get it converted or whatever you need to make it happen.

  21. hey josh and omar!!!

is there any sites where us old house mixtapes heads can share mixtapes and try to decipher the tracklistings? I love what you guys are doing here!

quick question. my first mixtape i heard and fell in love with was called Jeno – Illuminations but i can only find evidence of a markie mixtape with that same name but its a very different mix. is it possible jeno came out with a illuminations mix too or they both played the same party. i must find this mix.

  22. Hi Devlin! I’ve never heard of that Jeno tape before. Are you maybe confusing it with “Inspiration”? https://www.mixcloud.com/ohm_r/jeno-inspiration-side-a-1993/

As for other sites with track listings..there is TUNEID.COM, there is the trackid group on Discogs, I actually tried starting one up myself on Discogs but got a little bored with it and abandoned it. You can view what I attempted here….https://www.discogs.com/group/8275 There is also random stuff floating around on Youtube, Mixcloud, and Soundcloud. If you want a track list to a particular set..hunt it down where it’s posted and start one up in the comments if it hasn’t been already. People might help out.
    Hope that helps! Take care!!

  23. Hi Devlin! I answered your post over a week ago but I included links which flagged it and held it from being posted until Jason could moderate it. He’s been busy so I decided to write another reply.
I’ve never heard of that Jeno tape before. Are you maybe confusing it with “Inspiration”? That would be cool if it was an old one I haven’t heard before.
As for other sites to work on mixtapes I recommend TuneID.com or the TrackID group on Discogs. Or just find a mix you like on Youtube, Mixcloud,Soundcloud, or whatever…and start your own attempt. I also started my own group to work on track lists of some of my favorite DJ’s as well as my own stuff…but I got bored and abandoned it. You can view what I finished and contribute if you like over on my Discogs profile page under “groups”. To get there (without using links here) just look me up on Soundcloud. There should be a link on there to my Discogs on my page.
    Take care bud,
    Josh McClintock

  24. hey Josh!

Thanks for the reply! Listened to Inspiration again but its not it, thanks for the help though.

Wonder if you could help me ID a song? Its in this mix
https://www.mixcloud.com/JStanton/smartbeat97/ @ around 15:00, the throw your hands to the sky track, I am actually having a hard time finding a lot of the tracks on this mix, I’ve done well with Doc, Jeno, Garth, mixes but this one I really love (listened to it all the time when I was young) and just cant id much other than Buddy Booth EP , if know any of the tracks from this I would love your help!

also check out my group Freekazoidz, I aim to make shit Jeno would play at come unity, seriously thats my GOAL! lol :)

    peace
    Devlin

  25. Will always remember this event. As a DJ from the Eastside, I saw firsthand the first or one of the first “Raves” in Los Angeles. I went with my girlfriend at that time and my cousins. We started our adventure taking the first boat out with Michael Cook and Doc. Realized a guy I would party with from Walnut, was on the same boat with a good size tank full of “nitro”. I remember MTV filming as we headed to Catalina. ( I can’t wait to see that footage! I also had that segment on VHS, but recorded over it somehow). Do any of you remember that couple getting arrested for doing the do on the dance floor ?

  26. I was on the first boat too!! Do you remember the locals yelling at us as we got off the boat with signs and shit?? I later found out that they actually tried to bust the party but didn’t have enough police on the island to stop a riot so they let it go.
I do remember the couple getting busted. The girl was underage and the guy did some jail time from what I heard.
I was interviewed for MTV and actually turned up in their footage that was run with Kurt Loder a couple times. I had a copy of it too but my ex girlfriend taped something over it. @#$$!!! I tried contacting MTV and they told me it was probably destroyed when they moved their offices years ago. There have been several people on here that say they have it..including the people that threw this party…but when pressed..nope. Recently Steve Koolaid told me he might have it. My last hope. I would seriously pay someone a good amount of money to have the footage posted up.
I’ve said it before and I will say it again ….the absolute best party I’ve ever been too.

  27. Hey Josh!

I’m looking for a track id from Doc Martin – For The People.

https://youtu.be/zznNpfDfLRM it’s around the 9 minute mark. Sounds like it samples Marshall Jefferson – Move Your Body? After he plays Basement Jaxx – Fly Life.

  28. I don’t remember the issue with the locals. One of the things I do remember was getting a taxi from the dock to the hall, and the “nitro guy ” from Walnut gave the taxi driver a couple of nitro balloons as our fair. The “nitro guy” end up going to jail for a while. He was released the next morning. He told me he saw the guy who got arrested for the dance floor. Incident. According to the flyer, that I still have, it seems that it was boat 2 that I was on with Doc, Michael and Moon Pup. I especially remember the morning on the beach when I first heard Doc play “The Sun Rising” (Mood Mix) by The Beloved. Good times! I hope Koolaid posts that footage. It will be great to see again.

  29. Sorry Devlin, don’t know it.
That was a beautiful morning on the beach Buster. I remember there was a little wooden raft just off shore and people swam out to it and started dancing on it. I remember not wanting to leave. I believe I took the second boat home with Dom T.
