Various – Live At What?

live-at-what-mixed-tape

I’m not entirely certain of the various DJ’s for this Live @ What? mixed tape. My best guess is DJ Trance, Oscar Da Grouch and DJ Mellinfunk. Two of the mixes should be easily identifiable by The Beatles and Star Wars tracks. If anyone can positively ID who’s playing at what point on this mixed tape please post in the comments.

Destructo – Destructo (Hard / Medium)

dj-destructo-hard-medium-mixed-tape
dj-destructo-hard-mixed-tape
dj-destructo-medium-mixed-tape

Destructo (Gary Richards) began DJing and producing undergrounds in the early 90s in Los Angeles, most notably creating RaveAmerica at Knotts Berry Farm. Rick Rubin subsequently handpicked Gary for A&R in electronic music at Def American Recordings, launching a noteworthy career with such acts as Lords of Acid, Messiah, David Holmes, Basement Jaxx, Dub Pistols, God Lives Underwater and founding 1500 Records and Nitrus Records. After carrying his success to the metal world with No Name Mgmt, Destructo returned to his roots in 2007 by creating HARD. HARD events such as the HARD Haunted Mansion have become synonymous with cutting edge electronic music and unforgettable experiences, where the talent rosters reflect Destructo’s own impeccable DJ sets.

This self titled mixed tape from 1992 is a good example of what Destructo was playing in those early days of electronic music in Los Angeles. The Hard side is a selection of (now) classic hardcore tracks such as Digeridoo by Aphex Twin, Acid Drill by Edwards & Armani, and Poing by Rotterdam Termination Source. The Medium side kicks off with what I believe to be a rare release by Destructo, with the “Mighty Rain Spirit” sample (would love a correct ID), that gets mixed into Passion by Gat Decor. Unfortunately I don’t recall any of the other track titles on the Medium side, other than The Haunted Mansion soundtrack on Disneyland Records that the mix closes with.

Steve Loria – Deep Space

steve-loria-deep-space-mixed-tape-cover

As you may have noticed the site was unavailable for the past several days. I’m happy to say we’re up and running again thanks to the fine folks at Media Temple. If you notice anything that isn’t working as it should be, please let me know.

I had to change the RSS feed, so if you want to keep up to date on new posts be sure to subscribe.

Now back to the music…

This mixed tape by Steve Loria is from 1993 and was released at the same time as Chris Hyde’s – Milk & Cookies. The j-card designs for both Deep Space and Milk are my favorite of any mixed tapes. Thanks again to Chris for letting us know that Mike Messex did the artwork on these.

Technical Difficulties

As of this past week we’ve been experiencing FTP timeouts on any files that are taking longer than 10 minutes to upload. We’ve been unsuccessful with getting any real help from our hosting provider (GoDaddy) and will be testing out another provider this week. If you haven’t already, subscribe via rss to get updated once we’re back to normal.

Ernie Munson – Pair-A-Dime Shift

I believe this Ernie Munson mixed tape, of early house and techno, is from 1992 based on the tracks in the mix.

Either I’m getting old or I need to pare down my record collection to a point where I don’t spend an hour obsessively searching for track titles. I managed to dig up three off of the B Side but I’m calling it a night and leaving the rest to the more determined.
